Most online deals between strangers still run on “you send first”. One side pays and hopes; the other delivers and hopes. It works often enough that people keep doing it, and fails often enough to ruin someone’s month.

Digital goods make it worse. A social account, a licence key, a finished design, a deployed contract — there is no courier receipt, no address to chase, and nothing that gets seized at a border. The whole trade happens in a group chat, and the moment the money moves, the leverage moves with it.

Crypto raises the stakes again. A USDT transfer is final: no bank to call, no chargeback window, no reversal. That is genuinely good for sellers, who lose real money to payment reversal fraud on ordinary rails. It leaves buyers with nothing to fall back on.

Escrow is the old, boring answer to all of this — a third party holds the money until both sides have done their part. It was just never available for a $60 deal between two people who met in a Telegram group.

Escrow alone only answers who holds the money. It does not answer the argument that follows: was that actually delivered? Software cannot look at a handed-over account and tell you whether it is the one that was promised. A person can.

• Rooms get a moderator automatically. When both parties have joined, the room is offered to one available moderator at a time and widens out until someone takes it — so a room finds a human quickly without five of them racing for it.
• Moderators are anonymous to the parties. Everyone in a room sees “Moderator”, never a real name. Neither side can look them up, lean on them, or take the argument outside the room.
• Nobody moderates their own deal. Staff are allowed to trade here like anyone else, and the code refuses to let a moderator who is a party to a room release its funds or resolve its dispute.
• Decisions are written down. A dispute, its stated reason and the moderator’s resolution note are all posted into the room’s own history, where both parties can read them.
